In a world where technology is rapidly advancing, the field of IT has become more important than ever. However, it is still a male-dominated industry, and women working in IT face unique challenges and obstacles. In honor of International Women’s Day, we spoke with some of the strong women at Skycomp Solutions to hear their stories and insights about working in IT.
Meet Dyan:
Dyan, our Project Coordinator shared that what drew her to IT was the diversity of the workforce and the stimulating environment it provided. She also mentioned that, luckily, gender has not been an obstacle to her career growth as others she works with are more focused on their ability to do the job than on her gender.
Meet Kourtney:
Kourtney, our Digital Media Specialist says her experience as a woman in IT has been mostly positive. She feels fortunate to work in an environment where gender doesn’t seem to matter, and the men at Skycomp understand and value the contributions of their female colleagues. However, Kourtney has noticed a subtle difference in the way people react to her technical videos online compared to those of her male peers. Despite this, Kourtney advises other women considering a career in IT to hold their ground and be confident in what they do. She believes that confidence and self-assurance will earn respect, regardless of gender. Kourtney’s journey from broadcasting to marketing an MSP has taught her to be part of the minority in these industries, and she encourages other women to pursue their interests with determination and perseverance.
Meet Jaime:
Jaime has a unique perspective as an HR Coordinator at Skycomp. While she did not have previous experience in IT, she found the field to be a great fit and an opportunity to learn something new. Her advice to other women considering a career in IT is to jump in and take a chance, even if they don’t have previous experience. Jaime believes that women are becoming stronger in the workforce and that their confidence is driving them forward. She encourages women to continue to build their confidence and pursue their passions, as there is always something new to learn in the constantly evolving IT industry.
Meet Bridgette:
Bridgette discovered her passion for information technology while working as an Account Manager at Skycomp. She recognized the vital role of technology in business and found that working on IT projects offered her the opportunity to learn new technologies and collaborate with her team to find creative solutions to complex problems. As a woman in a male-dominated field, Bridgette has faced challenges related to gender biases and stereotypes, but she has overcome them by being confident in her abilities and seeking mentorship and support from other women in the industry. She advises other women to embrace their unique skills and perspectives, seek out learning opportunities and mentorship, and build relationships with others in the industry. As an Account Manager, Bridgette takes pride in being a critical link between Skycomp and their clients, building and maintaining strong relationships, and contributing to the success of the company and the industry.
Meet Olivia:
Olivia, another Skycomp Account Manager, shared that being in IT was never in her plans, but her curiosity about new technologies led her to her current job. She also highlighted the challenge of working in a male-dominated industry and how it takes extra effort to stand out. However, she advises other women to speak up and share their unique perspectives and insights to the industry.
Meet Kara:
Kara, who previously worked in the spa industry for over 10 years, found the IT field to be more fulfilling and rewarding. As an account manager, she enjoys keeping people connected and being a voice for their customers. Although she initially struggled with learning IT jargon and hardware, her experience at Skycomp helped her overcome these challenges. Her advice to women entering the male-dominated industry is to be involved, take up space, speak up, and ask questions. Her biggest accomplishment was becoming the first account manager at Skycomp and building a three-woman team that allowed the company to build stronger relationships with clients.
Meet Mandi:
Mandi has found immense satisfaction in helping clients find solutions to their problems. She advises other women who may be considering a career in IT or facing challenges in this field to be fearless in pursuing their goals and to use their voices confidently. As someone who fell into the industry by chance, Mandi shows that sometimes taking a chance and diving into something new can lead to a fulfilling and rewarding career.
Meet Morgan:
Morgan is our Chief Operation Officer. She has a passion for the ever-changing and dynamic nature of the IT industry and is evident in her work here at Skycomp Solutions. However, she recognizes that the lack of female representation in senior leadership positions can be a challenge for women in IT. As a result, Morgan strives to support, inspire, and elevate women who have joined the Skycomp team, helping them gain confidence and further themselves professionally in a male-dominated industry. Her guidance to women entering the IT field is to approach the challenge fearlessly, trust in their abilities, and avoid imposter syndrome. Morgan’s leadership and metrics have provided a clear sense of direction and motivation for the Skycomp team, resulting in significant progress towards achieving their long-term financial objectives and the overall well-being of the company.
