Lenovo ThinkPad Series: X1 vs. X9 vs. X12 vs. X13 – Which One is Right for You?

When it comes to business laptops, the Lenovo ThinkPad series stands out for its durability, reliability, and performance. With multiple models available, it can be challenging to determine which one best suits your needs. In this post, we explore the key differences between the ThinkPad X series laptops, helping you make an informed decision.

All of the X Series laptops are considered premium, executive-level devices. Today, we’re looking at four models: the X1 Carbon (Skycomp’s absolute favourite), the brand-new X9, the one-of-a-kind X12 (a 2-in-1 laptop), and the X13.

Let’s start with what they all have in common.
All models offer processors up to Intel Core Ultra 7 (U7). None of them include a dedicated graphics card (GPU). They are all MIL-SPEC tested, feature smudge-resistant surfaces, and come equipped with a built-in camera with privacy shutter and a fingerprint scanner.

Now, let’s look at them one by one.

ThinkPad X1 Carbon

The X1 Carbon takes the stage first—and for good reason. It’s one of the lightest Lenovo laptops on the market, which makes it an excellent choice if you carry your laptop everywhere.

It supports up to 64 GB of RAM and up to 2 TB of SSD storage. As part of Lenovo’s Aura Edition lineup, it is an AI-ready device with an enhanced NPU (Neural Processing Unit) that helps offload repetitive tasks from the CPU, improving overall performance and efficiency.

It features a 14-inch display, with touchscreen available as an option, the much-loved ThinkPad TrackPoint, and no number pad.

ThinkPad X9

Next up is the brand-new ThinkPad X9. It’s the only model in the X Series that comes in a 15-inch size—yet it still does not include a number pad.

Like the X1 Carbon, it’s an Aura Edition PC, offering up to 48 TOPS (trillion operations per second) of AI performance. It features 32 GB of soldered RAM and supports up to 2 TB of SSD storage.

The 15-inch model includes the largest battery in the X series lineup (80 Whr) and features a 4K camera. The signature TrackPoint is gone on this model, but the keyboard introduces a new typing feel and design.

While it’s slightly heavier than X1 models, it’s still very lightweight compared to performance-focused machines like the ThinkPad P Series.

ThinkPad X12

Next is the ThinkPad X12, also known as the 2-in-1 model—and no, this is not to be confused with Lenovo’s Yoga lineup. The X12 offers a true tablet-like experience thanks to its detachable keyboard, while still delivering the performance and durability of a full-fledged business laptop.

Despite its flexible form factor, the X12 is MIL-SPEC tested, meaning it’s built to withstand real-world use. The keyboard attaches magnetically, the pen is included, and it conveniently stores in a protective sleeve. This makes the device especially useful for field workers, technicians, and professionals who need mobility without compromise.

It features a 5 MP IR front-facing camera that supports Windows Hello, as well as an 8 MP rear camera—perfect for taking high-quality photos in the field and uploading them directly to cloud storage for ongoing projects.

The 12-inch display keeps the device compact and lightweight. You get up to 32 GB of RAM and up to 1 TB of SSD storage, which is impressive for a detachable device. And even though the keyboard is removable, it still feels solid, features backlit keys, and includes the classic ThinkPad TrackPoint.

ThinkPad X13

Last but not least, we have the Lenovo ThinkPad X13—a compact, reliable option for professionals who want strong performance in a smaller form factor.

The X13 delivers up to 13 TOPS of AI performance, supports up to 32 GB of RAM, and offers up to 1 TB of SSD storage. It features a 13-inch display, with an optional touchscreen for added flexibility.

Like all ThinkPad devices, it’s built to meet Lenovo’s strict durability standards and undergoes MIL-SPEC testing, ensuring it can handle the realities of everyday business use while maintaining the signature ThinkPad sturdiness and reliability.
