The 2022 Canada Summer Games were held in the heart of the Niagara Region. It was such an honor to be a part of this legacy especially since our company is based in St. Catharines Ontario.
Once it was announced that the games were taking place in Niagara it was a no brainer that Serge, the CEO of Skycomp Solutions wanted to get involved any way he could with this major event! Serge has always had a passion for sport, all of his children are involved in a variety of sports, and he believes in the building of the Niagara region and contributing to the community any way he can.
How it all started.
About a year before the games took place, the Canada Summer Games put out a request for a proposal for a technology partner to outsource a large portion of the IT infrastructure for the games. Since we already do the IT support for a few of the venues they were using, we saw an opportunity we couldn’t pass up. We submitted our proposal to the Canada Summer Games Council to be the IT vender for the games, and after a few interviews, and competition, we were thankfully awarded to partner with the summer games to handle all their IT infrastructure.
What this event meant for Skycomp.
This event was a great opportunity economically to bring sport tourism to the Niagara Region. One of the aspects we looked forward to from this event was the 2 legacy buildings it would leave behind for the community. The training facility at the Henley Regatta Island that will help athletes train in the off season and being able to hold functions and events there. The major building that was added was Canada Games Park near Brock University. This building is a state-of-the-art sports facility with 2 ice rinks, basketball/volleyball courts, running tracks and more. This world class building will bring great sports tourism to Niagara for generations and sporting opportunities for the youth.
We thought it was very exciting to be a part of such a large scale event that spans the country with athletes coming in especially in an area where we do our business.
Our involvment.
For the most part we were behind the scenes of the games. We handled all the IT infrastructure at every venue. We provided the internet connections, worked with the internet service providers, we did all the firewalls, network infrastructure, WI-FI, etc. This infrastructure supported the game volunteers, venders, and broadcasters for all the online streaming of the games. We were kind of that, behind-the-scenes networking that facilitated all the aspects of IT support for the 2022 Games.
Highlights from the Games.
One of the neat highlights for us during the games was having our own office in Canada Games Park! The NOC which stands for Network Operations Centre is where the heart of the tech side was located. For the most part we had techs on sight at most of the venues ready to provide support in case anything went south during the games, but the NOC is where all venues were getting monitored in one location.
We are so proud and honored to have had that level of involvement with the 2022 Canada Summer Games that we had our own operations centre set up in Canada Games Park!
Wrapping up.
We just want to give a huge thank you to the Niagara 2022 organization and the Canada Games Council for choosing us to be their IT Partner. Our entire team feels extremely honored to have such an involvement with the games and are proud of this event being placed in our Niagara community.
